Hagia Sophia was built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the old city center on the historical peninsula of Istanbul between 532-537. After Istanbul was taken over by the Ottomans in 1453, it was converted into a mosque by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Since 1935 it has been serving as a museum.
Hagia Sophia is a domed basilica type structure that combines the basilica plan and the central plan in terms of architecture and is considered as an important turning point in the history of architecture with its dome transition and bearing system features. The word a aya ındaki in the name of Hagia Sophia is kutsal holy, sainted, and “sofia olm is not the name of anybody. Thus the name “aya sofia” means “divine wisdom” or il divine wisdom olup and is considered one of the three qualities of God in the Orthodoxy sect.
